Proverbs A6a and A6b: Walking in Wisdom & not by sight

This is the one that has the weird "a6c" section all about contrasting which was really hard to nail down concise titles for.  But it's also the section that has the "not walking by sight" section. (a6b).  And I just noticed that a6a is all summed up by the biggest chiasm fail of the book (the one with the center line of "industry" and the huge stretch of A/A' where he tries to say that talking about a woman building her house is the same thing as saying to join the counsel of the wise.

Proverbs 14:2
Whoever walks in uprightness fears the LORD
but he who is devious in his ways despises him.
Proverbs 14:2
Whoever walks in uprightness fears the LORD
but he who is devious in his ways despises him.
Proverbs 14:2

That word "devious" is translated "perverse" by Waltke.

This is a Yahweh verse and was used on the first God Sunday.

Waltke comments "piety and ethics are inseparable" "by his ethics (not cultic ...) he betrays his religious affections.

Waltke also comments that the word "way" is plural because the wicked has no fixed way.

This is still a part of A6a (the namesake of "walking in wisdom"), and for Waltke forms part of his chiastic A for this subsection.

Proverbs 14:2
Whoever walks in uprightness fears the LORD
but he who is devious in his ways despises him.
Proverbs 14:2

Proverbs 14:3
By the mouth of a fool comes a rod for his back
but the lips of the wise will preserve them.
Proverbs 14:3
By the mouth of a fool comes a rod for his back
but the lips of the wise will preserve them.
Proverbs 14:3

This was used for both humility and pride in the same sermon. (dark turquoise).

Waltke comments that it should say "the mouth of a fool is a rod of pride for his back". In other words, he is his own worst enemy.

Still part of a6a (the namesake of "walking in wisdom".  It is the chiastic B about wise and foolish words.

Proverbs 14:3
By the mouth of a fool comes a rod for his back
but the lips of the wise will preserve them.
Proverbs 14:3

Proverbs 14:9
Fools mock at the guilt offering
  but the upright enjoy acceptance.
Proverbs 14:9
Fools mock at the guilt offering
  but the upright enjoy acceptance.
Proverbs 14:9

Waltke translates this quite differently:
As for fools, each one mocks at built.
But among upright people [there is] favor.

He says the cultic meaning of "Asam" (i.e. guilt) is unlikely in Proverbs.

His interpretation of this verse is that the upright do not incur guilt, and if they do, they are quick to make amends. And that the fools do not obtain favor, but refuses to make restitution.

Proverbs 14:9
Fools mock at the guilt offering
  but the upright enjoy acceptance.
Proverbs 14:9

Proverbs 14:14
The backslider in heart will be filled with the fruit of his ways
and a good man will be filled with the fruit of his ways
Proverbs 14:14
The backslider in heart will be filled with the fruit of his ways
and a good man will be filled with the fruit of his ways
Proverbs 14:14

This one is the B' to the 14:9 B above.  Saying that eventually, your ways will catch up to you (as opposed to the upright who enjoy acceptance in 14:9)

Waltke doesn't mind pushing the deed-consequence a little into the afterlife on this one.

He again notes that ways is plural for the wicked, denoting no fixed way, and his writing is poetic here: the varied ways have come together to mete out a unique fierce punishment.

The "good" (tob) man is pitted against this backslider (from God, i.e. perverse or rebellious person).

And Waltke interprets the "filled with" as punishment versus reward.

Waltke also seems to overflavor this one with the theme of walking by faith, not sight, since the disciple needs to trust the LORD for his reward.  I wondered why he was doing that, until I remembered that he was trying to cast this under the title "not walking by sight".

Proverbs 14:14
The backslider in heart will be filled with the fruit of his ways
and a good man will be filled with the fruit of his ways
Proverbs 14:14
